Distillation practices with juniper have run the gamut. However, one of the most famous practices was that of the Dutch physician Dr. Franciscus Sylvius, who sought a way to develop a medicinal tonic using gin to heal and cure kidney aliments in the 1600’s. The idea of gin as a medicine could have even started sooner, but one thing we know is that the idea of drinking juniper paired with refreshing botanicals is catching fire around the world. This drink starts with that “classic” inspiration of gin as a bright base to build on. It then blends in tea, used for calming and wellness aspects, and kombucha for a depth of flavor and its large body of antioxidants. Sticking with a kidney tonic, we add one of the world’s most popular mixers – cranberry juice. Balancing out a little of the sweet and bitter is a bright and bold citrus, passion fruit. Passion fruit is packed with Vitamin C and boosts the immune system. The Classic Cure takes a bunch of classic ideas and remedies, puts them together, and creates a cocktail that is both delicious and on the healthy side of things.
