Derailed is a photo series of the Washington, D.C. Metro edited to include a contrasting landscape. It is intended to add imagination and wonder to the underground scenes that hundreds of thousands of people pass through daily. The aesthetic of the metro is something unique to Washingtonians, and this photo series is an appreciation of that uniqueness.
Friedel graduated with a master’s degree in Architecture from Catholic University in May of 2018. Originally from Ossining, New York, she has lived in Washington since 2012. Her “Derailed” project started out of boredom on a train. While sitting on an Amtrak train bound for New York, she took a photo of a nearby Metro car while stopping at the New Carrollton station. With a few hours on her hands, she opened Photoshop and created the first image in the “Derailed” series.
