January 1, 2022
Pomegranate martini with slices of lime and pomegranate seeds

Glassware:  Martini Glass

2 oz. Ruby Port

.5 oz. Pomegranate Juice

.5 oz. Jefferson Ocean Bourbon

.25 oz. Orange Juice

2 Large Blackberries (or 3-4 smaller ones)

1 Pinch Sugar in the Raw

Before there were distilled spirts, (what are affectionately referred to as the Water of Life), there was wine. Said to have first appeared around 8,000 years ago, wine has been integral part in the longevity of the human species. In fact, wine has been a regular cocktail ingredient through the millennia. Whether enjoyed with cheese in Ancient Rome, consumed by pirates as they roamed the Caribbean, drunk at fancy dinners in colonial times, or paired up with delicious food in today’s pubs, wine has always been a staple. Fortified wine, which is made by adding a little bit of higher proof booze and sugar, has travelled the world and is the perfect robust flavor base for this cocktail. Next orange juice comes into play to keep the libation in harmony. Pomegranate juice deepens the flavors of the drink, and at the same time adds one of the highest antioxidant counts possible. For the last fragment of the liquid refreshment, traditional rum is switched for bourbon aged on an ocean vessel. Wine and wine cocktails are a fun way to bring wellness drink to the repertoire, and the Walking on Water looks to add to the list. Bonus – red wine is known to be good for the heart, good for blood pressure, and to be a vast storage of powerful antioxidants (when used properly).
