Auction House: A Diamond Like No Other

June 8, 2026

In a remarkable moment in the world of high-end jewelry auctions, the legendary Blue Moon Diamond was sold for a staggering $70 million at Phillips’ Hong Kong auction in March 2026. This sale not only set a new record for the price of a diamond but also underscored the growing global demand for rare and exceptional gemstones.

Blue diamonds, in general, are already rare, making up less than 0.1% of the world’s diamond supply. But the Blue Moon Diamond, weighing in at a flawless 15 carats, is one of the rarest diamonds in the world. Its intense blue color, which is a result of the presence of boron in its crystal structure, is unlike anything seen in the gem world. Often referred to as the “most perfect blue diamond ever discovered,” its unique hue is mesmerizing. What truly sets this diamond apart is its combination of flawless clarity and vibrant color, making it not just a valuable gemstone but a piece of natural artistry.

At Phillips, the diamond was offered for sale as part of a private collection, having been kept in a personal vault for several years. The auction saw fierce competition among international bidders, both private collectors and institutions, with some pushing the price far beyond initial expectations. The $70 million sale price not only shattered records for the auction house but also set a new standard for the jewelry world. The previous record for a blue diamond had been $50 million, and many experts were stunned as bidding quickly escalated to unprecedented levels.

As the auction progressed, bidders from around the world – Europe, the Middle East, and the U.S. – joined the fray, with Phillips’ auctioneer skillfully orchestrating the fast-paced bidding war. The remarkable price achieved by the Blue Moon Diamond reflects not just its beauty, but its status as one of the most coveted and unique gemstones in existence.

The Blue Moon Diamond’s $70 million sale marks a significant milestone in the jewelry world, further cementing its place as one of the rarest and most valuable diamonds ever to be sold at auction. As its new owner takes possession of this exceptional gemstone, the record-breaking bid sends a clear message: in the world of luxury and rare collectibles, few things hold the same level of allure as the beauty and rarity of a perfect blue diamond
