Meet the Stars of Winter – Maroon and Burgundy

December 29, 2025

As the cold season arrives, designers are leaning into richer, deeper hues to replace the usual neutrals. The wine-inspired tones – burgundy, oxblood, deep cherry, and maroon – have become a backbone of winter wardrobes. According to recent runway analyses and seasonal color-trend reports, burgundy is being hailed as “the new power neutral,” striking a balance between classical sophistication and expressive depth.

Rather than just seasonal carry-overs, these shades are being reimagined for outerwear, suiting, knitwear, even accessories — transforming what was once considered an autumnal “luxury red” into a versatile, year-end essential.

For women, deep reds are no longer decorative accents; they’re foundational. Burgundy coats, leather jackets, or full-tone outfits are replacing black or grey outerwear for those seeking a moodier but still chic winter look.

On the men’s side, brands are weaving burgundy into tailored coats, suits, and knitwear, thereby declaring it a “power neutral” for winter. It functions as an alternative to black or navy – it’s serious, elegant, and with a bit of subtle flair.

Gucci has been one of the more consistent houses to embrace burgundy. The shade, often dubbed by insiders as “Gucci red” or close cousins like “Rosso Ancora,” appeared heavily on its fall/winter 2025 runways across womenswear and menswear.

The deep red appears in luxurious textures such as coats, leather pieces, and tailored separates, allowing the house to revisit classic glamour with a moody, wine-toned twist rather than relying on black or neutral staples.

But Gucci is not the only house that is loving this color this season. According to color-trend round-ups for Fall/Winter 2025, Prada was listed among the houses adopting burgundy/oxblood as a key color.

Ferragamo appears in the same trend reports as Prada and Gucci, as its fall/winter 2025 shows included burgundy clothing and accessories, thereby aligning with the season’s broader “wine-red as neutral” movement.

Styling Tips to Build a Winter Wardrobe With the ‘It’ Color

  • Wear a burgundy coat rather than defaulting to black or grey. It adds personality without being overly loud.
  • Mix textures and try velvet pants, wool trousers, leather jackets, or knitwear in deep reds for a luxe, layered look.
  • Pair with neutrals or earthy tones (cream, camel, tan, chocolate brown) to let the burgundy breathe, rather than overpower.
